Each year the Elliott Scholarship is awarded by the Chamber of Commerce to a deserving senior from Water Valley High School. The scholarship was set up to honor Joe Elliott, Jr. and Patsy Elliott for their untiring efforts to reestablish the Watermelon Carnival. The 2010 recipient of the scholarship is John Michael Grimmett.
John Michael is the 18-year-old son of James and Mellinda Grimmet. He is a member of O'Tuckolofa Baptist Church.
John Michael began school in 1998 in Davidson Elementary and has attended all his school years in Water Valley.
An outstanding sportsman, John Michael played football in junior high and all four years of high school. He also played baseball in junior high and his Junior and Senior years of high school.
John Michael was a member of the Student Council, Bible Study Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Future Farmers of America.
Academic honors he received were: Teacher's Honor Roll in 2006, 2008, and 2010; Academic Excellence Awards in MS Studies in 2008; and Agri-Science I in 2010.
John Michael plans to attend Northwest Community College.
